  • 0302-005C. A rare early look at the Beverly Hills Witch House (aka the Spadena House) shortly after being moved from Culver City to Beverly Hills. In this image you can see the moat has recently been dug and the landscape is still quite bare. A wonderful look at one of the best examples of storybook architecture ever constructed. The home is still lovingly cared for and a popular photo stop.

  • Y-520409-01 “Decrepit. Once an imposing spot, this house shows disrepair which makes the area undesirable.“ Caption published Oregonian April 13, 1952 pg. 30. A very old North Portland house built before water and sewer connections were available in the area.  The tower on the side of the building is a combination windmill and water tower.  The windmill operated a pump that brought underground water up to the tank.  Next to it is the outhouse. Two addresses are visible on the front of the house, resulting from the 1933 Portland street renumbering. The house is on N. Clackamas on the nw corner of Crosby. The photo was taken April 9, 1952.

Photo taken before 1945, when the park was redeveloped into cottages and the Cannon was moved to Cannon Beach. Because of vandalism and theft, the Cannon was put in a museum in 1989. Many of the parts shown in this picture are now lost.

  • 9707-F07. Circle City, Alaska, Bucket Brigade fire department. A man in a buckskin coat stands outside the Circle City fire department building, with a pole in his hand which is used to ring the fire alarm bell. A sign next to him says “Ring Like H--l In Case Of Fire” On the top of the building is a sign “Phoenix” with a fireman’s axe and ladder emblem. On the street in front of the building is the fire wagon, a hand-drawn cart with 21 buckets, each approximately 5 gallon. The cart has 4 small diameter wooden wheels and is designed to move the water-filled buckets to the fire scene. The next door building has advertising affixed “Hote’s National Adv Service From Bangor Me. to Circle City”. Next door is apparently a saloon with the sign “Free Lodging”.
