  • Y-480302-1.This photo, titled “Haymaker Coming Up,” won first place in the 1948 Associated Press annual photography awards in the sports category. Bobby Zander, of Los Angeles, tosses a haymaker at Joe Kahut before a sellout crowd of 4700, with 3000 turned away, at Portland’s Civic Auditorium on March 2, 1948. In the 4th round Kahut began to land left hand blows to Zander’s body, followed up by rights to the head, while Zander responded with headshots of his own, while doubling up Kahut with a blow to the mid-section. Thirty seconds into the fifth round, a left hook to the jaw from Kahut floored Zander for the ten-count.
