The domed planetarium was erected on the front lawn in 1950 -- the first one in the Pacific Northwest. OMSI was forced to move out in 1957, and eventually settled in Washington Park next to the Zoo.   • CS00378-09. Indians fishing in Downes channel at Celilo Falls, September 1953. This is a good example of the tremendous amount of amateur photography that was taken at Celilo. Lafie Foster, the photographer of The Dalles Daily Chronicle, said that in the years immediately before 1957, more pictures were taken at Celilo than anywere else in the state. This 35mm Kodachrome slide was made by a linolium installer from Portland, Constantine Zimmerman. Ultimately, the interesting composition of the photograph earned it a place in the book Wild Beauty.

  • Archibald James Carey Jr. (1908 – 1981) speaking at Lincoln High School on Lincoln day. He was a Black American lawyer, judge, politician, diplomat and clergyman from the south side of Chicago. He was a key speaker at the 1952 Republican National Convention, and that speech is considered to be the seed of many of the sentences that Martin Luther King used in his "I Have a Dream" speech.
