  • 9904-B17"Riviera (Liberia) crew, taken in by immigration September 27, 1952" (Crew members went on strike protesting conditions on the ship while it was berthed at Swan Island. The crew was jailed by immigration until they could be place on other ships. The ship was not able to leave for three months) caption published in the Oregonian September 27, 1952 pg. 5 col. 4-5: "Twenty-two members of the crew of the Liberian steamship Riviera packed their bags and dressed in their best suits Friday so they would be ready to leave the vessel in accord with federal court orders. After they were taken away, their bags were left in orderly manner (above) with Harbor Patrolman Bernard R. McDonald standing watch. Authorities took men."

Most of the men are Germans who objected to food, sanitary conditions, and two-year working contract with owners, a Greek firm of London and New York."

This street is the approach to the steel bridge.  Entire building and street are curved. The photo was taken April 9, 1952.

  • Y-520409-01 “Decrepit. Once an imposing spot, this house shows disrepair which makes the area undesirable.“ Caption published Oregonian April 13, 1952 pg. 30. A very old North Portland house built before water and sewer connections were available in the area.  The tower on the side of the building is a combination windmill and water tower.  The windmill operated a pump that brought underground water up to the tank.  Next to it is the outhouse. Two addresses are visible on the front of the house, resulting from the 1933 Portland street renumbering. The house is on N. Clackamas on the nw corner of Crosby. The photo was taken April 9, 1952.

Dewey Joe Canapoo was born September 25, 1932 and died April 11, 1952, obituary in The Dalles Chronicle, April 13, 1952, pg. 1, col. 3. He appears to be about 8 years old in this photo. Nelson Billy died November 2, 1972 at age 43 in Portland, Oregon. Story in Oregonian, November 3, 1972, pg. 35 col. 1. Buster George of Celilo returned from Army service in Korea in April 1954. Cecil Billy of Goodnoe Hills, Washington, returned from Army service in Korea in July, 1955. <br />

(Identifications by Celilo Village elders April 1994, additional identifications by contemporary Celilo resident September 2012) Horvath notch code #14B. Emulsion #33. Other photos taken about the same time, with the same emulsion number, are 9305-A4312-1, 9305-A4312-5, 9305-B7044, 9305-B7046.  B7046 was published in the Oregon Journal on May 12, 1940 and Everett Olmstead was credited as the photographer. 9305-A4312-5 shows a 1940 license plate on a Ford car.
