CS02225. Shortly after architect Will Martin was chosen to design Pioneer Courthouse Square, he arranged for a scale blueprint of his design to be painted on the existing site, which was the old Meier & Frank parking lot. Miller Paint contributed the brick-red paint, and the application by A-1 Industrial Painting. On Saturday, September 27, 1980, a crew of architects, volunteers and Martin’s friends painted the locations of the future steps, columns and plaza in starkly contrasting colors. For three months this block temporarily became Portland’s largest public artwork, lasting until the old parking building was demolished in February 1981. In this picture, the street on the right is SW Broadway. The area shown in this picture is where the fountain was eventually built.
