XXX-00001. The Starlite Drive In, located in South El Monte, California was designed by the architectural team of William and Clifford Balch. The single screen theatre opened to the public in 1950. The Starlite was designed to accommodate 850 cars and included many features that took full advantage of the Southern California climate including a playground for the children.
The Starlite was one of many Southern California theatres that flourished during the golden years of the drive in theatre. The drive in was so popular in California that the number of theatres grew from roughly 44 in 1948 to 180 in 1958.
This circa. 1949 image shows the wonderful Starlite marquee shortly after construction and just prior to opening to the public.
