Air Force pilot recovery on Mt. Hood. 1949

Ackroyd 1700-19. Joe Leuthold cutting down the upper half remaining of the sergeant’s body as Everett Darr belays him. They drove pitons into the face of the cliff and roped up in a perilous perpendicular ascent to recover the body, which was caught in the rocks dangling from a parachute that opened on impact when the plane struck the rock. The Air Force B-26 crashed April 21, 1949 on Mt. Hood at Mississippi Head while attempting an instrument landing at Portland during a storm. Snow hid the wreckage four months until it was discovered.
