The "no blackout inside" sign is because California cities were routinely facing blackouts after May 27, 1941, when President Roosevelt issued a proclamation of unlimited national emergency because of the European war. All major American cities began having regular blackout drills.

  • XXX-00001. The Starlite Drive In, located in South El Monte, California was designed by the architectural team of William and Clifford Balch. The single screen theatre opened to the public in 1950. The Starlite was designed to accommodate 850 cars and included many features that took full advantage of the Southern California climate including a playground for the children.<br />
<br />
The Starlite was one of many Southern California theatres that flourished during the golden years of the drive in theatre. The drive in was so popular in California that the number of theatres grew from roughly 44 in 1948 to 180 in 1958.<br />

  • XXX-00002. This image provides a rare look at the exterior of the then-new Castaways Hotel & Casino. The reader board on the sign mentions it being the newest hotel on the strip, while the billboard at the far right advertises the Bottoms Up show, which was headlined by Redd Foxx in 1963 and 1964.

  • 0302-005C. A rare early look at the Beverly Hills Witch House (aka the Spadena House) shortly after being moved from Culver City to Beverly Hills. In this image you can see the moat has recently been dug and the landscape is still quite bare. A wonderful look at one of the best examples of storybook architecture ever constructed. The home is still lovingly cared for and a popular photo stop.
