  • OPS-07-32"Cutting into a Forest Giant. A falling crew start the cut that will drop this giant spruce tree to the forest floor near Aberdeen, Wash. (Washington) Sometimes the trees are so large, it takes all day to fell one. The Pacific Northwest's lumber industry, which supplies much of the nation's home building material, is experiencing boom days. The axe and the saw are cutting into forests at a peak tempo. 5/22/47" photo to accompany Gordon G. Macnab's AP story on Pacific Northwest's Lumber Industry for publication after June 1, 1947.

  • OPS-07-31"He's Needed on the Domestic Front. Too many men like this high climber have left the logging industry. Some 5,000 loggers from the Northwest have gone into the army, thousands more into shipyards and other war industries. Not long ago the War Manpower Commission ordered all loggers back to the woods. Its efforts have been productive but there's still a critical shortage. The high-climber pictured here in an Oregon forest is a specialist of the first magnitude. He scales the timber giants, cuts off the tree top 100 or more feet above the ground before the fallers begin cutting at the base. 7/13/43" Wide World photo.
